Defying Gravity ist ein Song aus der zwölften Episode der fünften Staffel, 100, und wird von Kurt, Mercedes und Rachel gesungen. Wie schon in Furcht und Tadel dient der Song erneut dem Entscheid eines Diva-Offs, diesmal zwischen Mercedes und Rachel, die vom Glee Club entscheiden lassen wollen, wer von ihnen beiden mehr Talent hat.
Das Original stammt aus dem Musical Wicked aus dem Jahr 2003.

Als man Chris fragte, welchen Song er gern für die 100. Epsiode wieder singen möchte, schlug er diesen vor. Quelle
Nach der Performance sagt April, dass der Song am Broadway sein sollte. Dies ist eine symbolische Referenz auf Kristin Chenoweths Langzeitrolle als Glinda in der Broadwayproduktion von Wicked, aus der Defying Gravity ist.
Rachel erklärt Mercedes, dass sie Defying Gravity für die Aufgabe nicht singen kann, weil sie und Kurt bereits geplant haben, ihr Duett zu wiederholen und es neu zu mischen, in dem sie die Parts tauschen, so dass sie den hohen Ton am Ende treffen kann. Damit bezieht sie sich auf das Diva-Off aus Furcht und Tadel, was jedoch genau genommen kein Duett war, da die beiden den Song jeweils einzeln sangen, um zu entscheiden, wer ihn bei den Sectionals singen darf.
