Rachel e Mercedes sono rivali sin dal loro primo incontro alla William McKinley High School. Mentre vengono intervistate in un episodio di Fonduta Per Due, Rachel e Mercedes realizzano di aver pensato di cantare la stessa canzone al Glee Club. Sia Kurt che Rachel e Mercedes cantano Defying Gravity alle Nuove Direzioni, a cui chiedono di votare il migliore. Alla fine, Will posticipa la decisione, rimandando anche eventuali dissapori.
