Loretta Devine, born August 21, 1949,[1] is a 69-year-old American actress. She is known for her roles on Grey's AnatomyThe PJs, Boston Public and originated a role on Dreamgirls. She guest starred as Sr. Mary Constance on Glee.

Personal Life

Devine was born in Houston, Texas to James Devine and Eunice O'Neal.[2] Her late father had early-stage dementia.[3]

Devine graduated from the University of Houston with a Bachelor of Arts in Speech in 1971 and Drama and Brandeis University with a MFA in Theater in 1976.[1]

Devine resides in Los Angeles, California.[4]


Devine made her Broadway debut in "Hair" in 1977[5], and was originally in the Broadway production of "Dreamgirls", the role that brought her fame[3], for three and a half years till 1985.[6] She also appeared in "A Broadway Musical" in 1978, "Comin' Uptown" in 1979/1980, and "Big Deal" in 1986.[7]

She was on A Different World in 1987/1988, on Sugar and Spice in 1990, and appeared in numerous TV shows and films in the 1990s and 2000s.

Devine had a recurring role on Boston Public for four years till 2004, was on Grey's Anatomy for seven and a half years till her character, whom had Alzheimer's, died in 2013, and had a role on The Client List for a year till 2013. She was on State of Georgia in 2011, which was cancelled, had a voiced role in Doc McStuffins in 2012, and voiced a role on The PJs on-off in 1999 - 2001, 2008.

In 2015, Devine was casted in the NBC comedy show The Carmichael Show as Cynthia Carmichael. It was green lighted for six episodes and will air in August.[8]
